In collaboration with the Stand With Women campaign of Granite State Progress & Education Fund and NH Citizens Alliance, local businesses across New Hampshire will mark this year’s Equal Pay Day on Tuesday, April 4th by providing a discount to women equivalent to the percentage in wage gap. Businesses will stand in solidarity with women by charging them only 80% of their bill to highlight the wage gap that finds women earning 80 cents to a man’s dollar.
We cordially invite you to join us at one of these businesses throughout the day to help highlight Equal Pay Day and steps we can take to close the gender wage gap. In particular, we will host noon media events at The Works Bakery Cafes in Portsmouth, Durham, Concord, and Keene. Or join us for a Stand With Women Unhappy Hour at The Crazy Goat in Concord from 4 to 7 pm. Please RSVP to zandra@granitestateprogress.org.
Equal Pay Day is the date each year that symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. According to the latest data, female full time workers are paid 80 cents for every dollar paid to male workers. For women of color, the wage gap is even larger: African American women make 71 cents compared to all men, or 63 cents for every dollar paid to a white male worker, the largest demographic group in the labor force. Latina women make the lowest at 61 cents for every dollar paid to men, or 54 cents for every dollar paid to a white male worker. These numbers reflect the difference in men’s and women’s typical earnings, using the median earnings of women and men full-time, year-round workers, and are impacted by the many discriminatory barriers to equal pay—including lower pay for women in the same job; the segregation of women into lower-paying jobs and exclusion of women from higher-paying, nontraditional jobs; bias against women with caregiving responsibilities; and lack of workplace policies to allow workers to care for families without paying a stiff economic penalty.
