In New Hampshire, over 33,000 young adults do not have health insurance. Many view these young adults as “invincibles” who can risk forgoing coverage and hope for the best when it comes to illness and accidents. However, this group is not as invincible as they’d like to be; like the rest of the population, many young adults have to deal with chronic illness and acute health problems that require access to health care. On April 8th at 6:30 PM in the Lantern Room at Keene State College’s Student Center, “The Young Adult Healthcare Forum-Uncovered” will allow young adults to share their stories of how the healthcare crisis has impacted them. A few of the young adults organizing the event will also speak—young adults who went directly to the workforce, university students, and graduate students—as well as a local nurse and activists working on access to healthcare in our state. Small group discussions plus questions and answers will provide time for young adults to meet, swap stories and ideas about how to cope in difficult times, and discuss strategies to gain better healthcare coverage. Most of us understand that older Americans suffer when they are denied access to healthcare, but we do not often think or talk about how young people are harmed by the high cost of health services and the absence of coverage. In regards to healthcare, these young adults have their own concerns that impact their lives and their future choices in many serious ways. Upon graduating and entering the workforce, young people often go without insurance because they cannot afford it, are no longer covered by their parents’ insurance, or their own workplace does not provide coverage, so they are left to choose between necessary health care and medical debt.
