U.S. House Overwhelmingly Passes Historic Blueprint for Transformational Change

Budget Plan Sets Stage for Obama Priorities:
Health Care Overhaul, Clean Energy Jobs, Higher Education Reform

Concord, NH – Members of Congress from every corner of the country came together today to support President Obama’s vision for a future of broadly shared prosperity. The budget garnered votes from 233 Democrats, including Representative Paul Hodes and Representative Carol Shea-Porter, and carried no Republican votes.

“This is a powerful event that sets in motion a close to the failed policies of the past eight years and provides a blueprint for a better future,” said Zandra Rice Hawkins, Executive Director of Granite State Progress. “I thank Representative Hodes and Representative Shea-Porter for supporting this strong framework that will bring jobs, opportunity and new hope to the state of New Hampshire. I am disappointed that other members of Congress could not move past partisan politics and support this budget. In this time of crisis, just saying no is not acceptable.”

Granite State Progress, along with Every Child Matters, Greenpeace New England, NH Citizens Alliance for Action, New Hampshire Change That Works, Seacoast for Change Grassroots Network, and Working Families Win are part of the New Hampshire Rebuild and Renew Campaign building public support for President Obama’s budget, a transformational blueprint for rebuilding and renewing America through major investments in health care reform, education, clean energy and many other important priorities. Over the past two weeks, members of the groups have organized phonebanks, door-to-door canvasses and community events to call on New Hampshire’s Congressional delegation to continue to turn away from the failed economic policies of the past and support these important investments in America’s future that will strengthen the economy and expand opportunities for all.

Following in the footsteps of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, this budget is a major step toward solving the problems that have dogged this nation for years. In his address to Congress on February 24, President Obama called for passage of a budget that would allow us to tackle longstanding issues that have been left to languish over the last eight years: health care, college affordability, our addiction to foreign oil, and a solid foundation for economic growth.

The budget passed in the United States House of Representatives lays the foundation for these desperately needed changes and does so in a fiscally responsible way with an eye on reducing the deficit in the near future.
