Change that Works Campaign - Organizer in Training (Concord)

SEIU is looking for a motivated, organized, and dedicated individual to work with a Change that Works Campaign Political Community Organizer to implement a grassroots advocacy campaign to pass national health care for all and the Employee Free Choice Act in 2009. The Organizer in Training will work as part of a team to implement an escalating field campaign that will include mobilization, organization building, earned media, and direct action to influence priority Members of Congress to support legislative priorities critical to rebuilding the middle class.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to work with your Political Community Organizer to:

• Help execute a plan to educate federal elected officials and constituents on health care and employee free choice through activities such as house meetings, patch through calls, earned media events, direct action and other methods.

• Take responsibility for organizing and implementing organization building and mobilization field activities in your assigned area including one on one meetings, house meetings and regular field mobilizations,

• Build local organizations by recruiting, training, coaching, and motivating teams of volunteers and members in targeted areas,

• Provide regular written and verbal reports,

• Mobilize members and activists to participate in targeted activities such as bird-dogging, demonstrations, and earned media activities—including letter-to-the-editor writing campaigns, op-eds, and events—designed to move priority elected officials,

• Help achieve fundraising goals by working toward the SEIU Justice for All Goal.

Qualifications:
• Candidate should be a motivated self-starter with a commitment to the movement for quality, affordable health care for everyone and employee free choice,

• Good listening and communication skills,

• Good judgment in interacting and communicating with the public, as well as political and community leaders,

• Willingness and ability to take direction and function well within a team structure,

• Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully in diverse communities,

• Willingness to learn new skills and stay current on news and issues that affect the campaign,

• Ability to work in a coalition of allies both inside and outside of organized labor,

• Basic computer skills,

• Ability to effectively collect contributions and track progress toward goals,

• Bilingual skills useful, but not required.

• A valid drivers license and clean driving record,

• Energized by political and issue advocacy involvement.

Working Conditions:

• Long and irregular hours, including weekends and occasional holidays,

• Extensive travel likely in district, across state, and at times across the nation.

Reports To:
Political Community Organizer or designee.

Term of Employment:
This is a temporary position beginning as early as February 2009 and end as late as September 2009.
